We are proud and happy to have Dorothy Zemach, stop by to have an event with us here in Stuttgart on her way to IATEFL Harrogate. Her topic, “Teaching Intensive & Estensive Reading Skills” is a very welcome one to us!

Teaching reading can be challenging, because students confuse “reading” with “literacy,” and assume that once they can decode words—and know enough vocabulary—they’ll be proficient readers. However, there are definite skills and strategies that successful readers use to read faster, understand better, and remember more easily. This workshop will focus on intensive reading skills for all stages of reading (pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading) that can be taught and practiced in the classroom, no matter what texts you are using. I’ll also cover how to write questions and exercises to go with all stages of reading, which you can apply to your own texts.

Finally, we’ll explore different ways to set up and carry out an extensive reading program so students can work on reading fluency outside of class. We’ll discuss selecting texts, how to ensure the reading gets done, progress checks, and assessment.
