Postcolonial power structures and knowledge archives continue to shape our society and the perceptions and actions of individuals who have grown up in it. Educational institutions and the teaching materials they use contribute to this, for example, by using Eurocentric and racialized representations of African societies and black people. Therefore, this workshop aims to help educators critically engage with existing materials and develop strategies for promoting decolonization in the design and use of their own materials.

For this purpose, key aspects of decolonization will lead us to strategies that can be applied by educators when evaluating, adapting and designing teaching materials. These strategies will further be applied exemplarily to some excerpts of ELT teaching materials that deal with African countries such as Nigeria. Based on this, the workshop will provide opportunities to analyze the potential of resources that deal with African countries and the diaspora, for example, digital media and movies. Finally, short task sequences will be developed and discussed.

Lena Hertzel (she/her) works as a research assistant in EFL Education at the University of Duisburg-Essen. She studied English and History at the University of Münster and graduated with a master’s degree (Master of Education für das Lehramt an Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen) in 2022. During her studies she spent a year abroad in Ghana to work as a volunteer at PEC School in Nsawam Adoagyiri.
Her main research interests revolve around inter- and transcultural learning, global citizenship education and anti-racist education. In addition, one of her core concerns is the consideration of Postcolonial Theories in ELE. Following up on this, her PhD project is concerned with decolonizing cultural learning.
