Educational inst itutions and the teaching materials they use contribute to this\, for exam ple\, by using Eurocentric and racialized representations of African socie ties and black people. Therefore\, this workshop aims to help educators cr itically engage with existing materials and develop strategies for promoti ng decolonization in the design and use of their own materials.\nFor this purpose\, key aspects of decolonization will lead us to strategies that ca n be applied by educators when evaluating\, adapting and designing teachin g materials. These strategies will further be applied exemplarily to some excerpts of ELT teaching materials that deal with African countries such a s Nigeria. Based on this\, the workshop will provide opportunities to anal yze the potential of resources that deal with African countries and the di aspora\, for example\, digital media and movies. Finally\, short task sequ ences will be developed and discussed.\nLena Hertzel (she/her) works as a research assistant in EFL Education at the University of Duisburg-Essen. S he studied English and History at the University of Münster and graduated with a master’s degree (Master of Education für das Lehramt an Gymnasi en und Gesamtschulen) in 2022. During her studies she spent a year abroad in Ghana to work as a volunteer at PEC School in Nsawam Adoagyiri.\nHer ma in research interests revolve around inter- and transcultural learning\, g lobal citizenship education and anti-racist education. In addition\, one o f her core concerns is the consideration of Postcolonial Theories in ELE.
