Nearly marking an anniversary for online workshops at ELTAS, on March 15, we hosted Gabriella Kovács on the Rationale behind LC in Business English for Adult Learners/Tertiary Education. In this online workshop, Gabriella introduced our members to the value that coaching can add to their work and some tools for getting started as a Language Coach (LC).

By doing less talking and more active listening, asking the right questions, and setting the right goals, the coach – or in some of our cases, the teacher – can guide students into a more realistic and attainable place to learn. Gabriella started with a little history on coaching and the basic concepts, including the GROW model. Some basic tools, such as the SWOT and benchmark criteria were also discussed and presented.

Have you ever thought of teaching a standard course book using coaching skills? Here we found it was possible and working through the “how to” of it was actually discussed in this workshop. One on one tasks were given to members as practice to do with others in breakout rooms as well. Personally, I love when we go into breakout rooms, as it gives me a chance to speak to other members on a personal level. On this occasion, I met with a member of one of our sister organizations, which was a particularly enjoyable surprise! It’s always great to have members from sister organizations in attendance!

On the whole a pleasant and informative overview on how coaching competencies can keep learners motivated and on track, while keeping the coaches/ teachers – “in the know” on how to get their students where they want and need to be going.
This was an insightful introduction to coaching for those who have not done so before, and a good reminder to those who have been coaching for some time.
