Laura Edwards teaches Business English to university students, and also work in test development and teacher training. Over the last few years, she has moved into the field of online learning by developing concepts and content for digital tests and online materials for students at all levels of the Common European Framework. In 2017 she completed her MA in Technology, Education and Learning. Her focus is on language learning, communication, creativity and technology.

Despite abundant input and opportunities to communicate, many students ‘get stuck’ and their language development seems to stop or fossilise before they reach a native-like state. This not only affects their skills, but has an impact on their confidence, motivation and self-efficacy.

We tend to assume that adult learners know how to learn. However, regular reflection is needed to raise students’ awareness of their errors and encourage them to analyse the strategies they use to address these. In this workshop we’ll reflect on our own language learning journeys, and look at how empowering learners to take responsibility for their learning can help prevent fossilisation.
