Our joint ELTAS/ELTAF venture hosted another of Patricia de Griese’s workshops on Saturday, 12 June: “Dealing with difficult students” Despite the summery weather a number of ELTA members across Germany took part in the online event.  Prior to starting, participants had the possibility for a quick chat in the teachers’ lounge. Patricia provided yet another very interactive workshop. Her positivity and energy was very engaging.

How do you deal with difficult students?
We shared our experiences and explored our own reactions towards the difficult student. We also looked at categorizations of learner/personality types. Different learners react differently to given tasks.

How do you keep them all on board?
This is the teacher’s task. Give them something interesting to do. It is quite simple really: A student’s engaged mind will neither have the capacity nor the willingness of causing any difficulty in class.

What I am personally taking away from this afternoon is that communication is key (who would have guessed?! ) and that we need to listen to our students not in order to respond, but in order to meet them where they are and help them proceed to the next level in learning.
