Our latest event on September 19, Audience and Purpose, with Michelle Hunter was a welcome back of sorts in these strange and restrictive Covid-19 times. Though with a reduced number of attendees, we were able to enjoy an insightful gathering and learning experience.

Michelle Hunter’s workshop focused on some of the things we as language teachers sometimes forget to highlight, particularly with the students who intend to refine the skills that they have already acquired. Noun phrases, being concise, and “trimming the fat” from written work were discussed in order to help students become more effective in their writing.

Writing genres were discussed in a way to make the student aware of what kind of language we use for what purpose. This becomes particularly important for students at university level or for those who need English for specific and targeted audiences. The use of  coherence and cohesion was brought to light in a way that can make the student aware of style and for what purpose or for whom a piece is written.

Michelle Hunter used insightful activities to provide us, as teachers, helpful ways  to engage our students in the classroom to empower them in improving these areas of language use.

It was an enjoyable and productive workshop! Notes and slides will be posted for members only soon!
