ELTAS' Tim Phillips Workshop ReviewIn ELTAS’ Tim Phillips workshop, there were two reasons to look forward to this event on September 18, 2021. The first was that the workshop by Timothy Phillips titled “Practical approaches to integrating soft skills development in your teaching and training” was sure to be interesting and enlightening. The second was that it was the first time that ELTAS members had had the chance to meet face to face since the start of the pandemic. Happily, the event delivered in both respects.

The workshop addressed how key soft skills such as communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence can be integrated into our teaching, particularly how we can foster a growth mindset by getting students to reflect on their own skills and actions in discussions. We started off by talking about how the pandemic has changed us and what will be required of us as business English teachers going forward. The workshop then moved on to various activities such as active listening, individual and collaborative brainstorming following a process called TIGSA* (which stands for Topics, Information, Goals, Solutions, Actions), and most importantly self-reflection and communication analysis focusing on constructive feedback.

After an afternoon of hard (yet enjoyable) work, it was time to kick back and relax, with many of the attendees making their way over to the New Shanghai restaurant for dinner. It was great to reconnect face to face with so many wonderful people and hopefully we will have another chance to meet up in person again soon.
