More or less\nTask-based Learning as a recognised methodology finds its place w ithin the communicative language teaching framework. However\, as its titl e suggests\, the task takes centre stage. Most teachers will have used tas k-based activities in their classes\, to a lesser or greater degree\, prob ably without even having been aware that they are doing so.\nIn the planni ng stages of the Heads Up series\, Mark\, Richard and myself were keen to address the real needs non-native English speakers had in becoming operati onal in the language. Between our scores of years as teachers\, trainers a nd examiners we came to the collective decision that unless learners learn t by doing\, they learnt very little at all. Our choice fell on TBL/Task-b ased Learning methodology because it focuses on both accuracy and fluency in spoken English.\nThis talk will look briefly at the theoretical framewo rk of TBL and then will move on to show how it can be used and adapted to fit almost any EFL teaching situation. I will share my own experiences of TBL lessons which can follow the TBL framework in a more or less orthodox way.  Once the trainer has been converted\, the sky’s the limit and les sons become instrumental\, stimulating and motivating\, for both the stude nt and the trainer.\n Louise Green is co-author of the Heads Up\, Spok en English for business series and author of Cult Holiday 1 and 2 for sec ondary school students. Based in Milan\, with the British Council and Inte rnational House\, she has been a Speaking Examiner for all the main suite Cambridge English exams and other top international certifications for the last 20 years.
